Establishing a national program for breeding pulses for export
Agricultural Export Market

Chickpea, Faba Bean and Lentil Exports

Expanding markets in India, Turkey and the Middle East favour chickpeas, faba beans and lentils with particular colours, textures and culinary attributes. Australia needed a national coordinating body to ensure plant-breeding efforts meet the requirements of local and export markets.

Actions Taken

Greg Bender was appointed to coordinate a national program for breeding these pulse crops.

  • Developed a participation agreement, national operations plan, commercialisation policies, and procedures for managing intellectual property and distribution of royalties.
  • Negotiated consensus between all states on plans, policies and procedures.
  • Established a national program for pulse breeding.

Results

Pulse crops, bred and grown in Australia, are better meeting the needs of major export markets. Exports of chickpeas, faba beans and lentils for human consumption have increased significantly.
